In The Name Of Love: Africa Celebrates U2 pays tribute to the music, culture and future of Africa, and an unprecedented musical homage to Bono and U2 for their ongoing humanitarian relief efforts aiding the beloved continent. Produced by Shawn Amos and Paul Heck, the compilation features Grammy Award-winning/nominated African artists as well as top up-and-coming talents, who have recorded 12 original interpretations of classic U2 hit songs and some of their more obscure material. The collection kicks off with Angelique Kidjo’s powerful multilingual cover of the 1991 chart-topper, “Mysterious Ways.” Aerosmith’s Joe Perry joins Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars for an upbeat, guitar-driven take on “Seconds,” a track from U2’s third studio release, War (1983). Rising Malian star, Vieux Farka Touré offers a trancy, Sahara Desert blues-influenced rendition of “Bullet The Blue Sky,” an absolute standout performance of one of U2’s most-played live in concert tunes. The African Underground All-stars featuring Chosan, Optimus and Iyeoka are in rare form with an audacious and upbeat redition of “Desire produced by Nomadic Wax and Notable Productions”.

In The Name Of Love: Africa Celebrates U2 sets itself apart from an array of other tribute albums with elaborate liner notes, including demographic information (e.g. each artist’s country of origin, date of independence, population size, main export, major issue facing the region, recent actions taken to improve its current state, and relevant websites with additional information). A portion of its proceeds will directly benefit The Global Fund, the world’s largest international financier of the fight against AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria, so please enjoy and take part in the cause.

“The intersection of hip-hop and activism gets a lot of lip service in the U.S., but the reality is that popular rap music is still mostly about the bling, not the political ring. That’;s not the case in Senegal, where political hip-hop thrives.”
-Christopher Porter, The Washington Express

“The ‘Democracy in Dakar’ documentary follows the 2007 election and gives a down to earth perspective on the public opinion on the current leadership alongside interviews and performances from Senegalese rappers, giving their honest, undiluted stand point on the state of the country. The documentary alone is an intriguing insight into the sociopolitical structure of Senegal….If you are looking to get a deeper outlook on what’s happening in Senegal both musically and politically or if you just want to listen to some fresh African hip-hop, then you must take a look at this highly motivated, politically conscious project.”
-Luke Branston, BBC NEWS

“The documentary project, ‘Democracy in Dakar; highlights the impact hip hop artists have had on the democratic process in Senegal, shedding light on the politics of one of francophone Africa’s more stable democracies and showing the contradictions that lie just below the surface.”
-Msia Kibona Clark, AllAfrica.com
