NEW YORK – On Thursday, July 20, Lamine Touré & Group Saloum celebrates its CD release at the Lava Gina World Music Lounge. Led by world-renowned griot percussionist Lamine Touré, Group Saloum performs original soul-driven music highlighted by the infectious rhythms of Touré’s sabar drums, fusing Senegalese mbalax with elements of funk, reggae, jazz, and Afrobeat.
July 25, 2004 marked the public performance debut of Lamine Touré and Group Saloum at the Central Square World’s Fair. The concert was a smashing success, drawing record crowds to the African Stage. Since then, the group has performed regularly throughout the northeast. Recorded by ASCAP-winning producer Dan Cantor of Notable Productions, and distributed by Nomadic Wax, Group Saloum’s debut recording has already won critical acclaim, being featured on the Afropop Worldwide radio show, “Africa in America-2005.” Group Saloum’s summer 2006 tour includes dates in Massachusetts, NYC, Vermont and Maine, and will culminate in an appearance at Floydfest in Floyd, VA.
